Question No.:  5201 Category :  Refining Operations
Date Posted:  3/13/2010
Subject: Fixed bed reactor simulation

Question:
This is in continuation to question no. 5195 that I asked previously. Mr. John McLean, from Ventech Engg, Pasadena, TX responded to my question. I would like to know more from him and everyone else too.

Can you please provide me some good and detailed refinery model on petrosim (starting from scrap) as a case study or an example?

Any model of commercial value is proprietary. My company pays good money to catalyst vendors for performance information and there is no way in hell they would release the model to us or to you. Is this a real refinery stream or just academic work?

Again if you want to know the composition of real refinery streams there are a variety of ways to characterize it depending on the application. For a feed naphtha stream you run a simdist and get the component data (hundreds of compounds, light ends and C4-C9 paraffins, isoparaffins, naphthenes, olefins, aromatics, sulfides, thipenes, mercaptans, nitrogen compounds). Inside the reactor block you need the rate equations for these compounds. I have never done this but you can bet it is complex and the results have to be tuned against the lab and commercial applications for any real predictive value.
